Wine labels, history and origin

It is the dressing that most dresses the bottle, which identifies and presents the wine with a simple glance. Carrier of the wine brand, every day more is looking for aesthetics and a certain distinctive touch that attracts the attention of the consumer. Shape, design and color come into play and adapt to new trends, sometimes with a harmonious and attractive game of contrasts, to such an extent that sometimes a label that came to him represents more.

The label is stuck in the center of the bottle and does not have standardized dimensions. It must appear all the necessary information so that the consumer knows what he is going to drink, or in other words, is the means of communication used between the wine producer and the consumer. Contrary to what one might think, the label also has its history.

Numerous documentary references confirm that the Romans already labeled the wine amphoras, indicating the origin of the wine and the name of the presiding consul at the time of packaging. As for palpable labels, the oldest ones date from the 18th century and are very simple, without ornaments or drawings, perhaps a small hand-drawn border. In them they appear data on the type of wine, the year, the bodeguero and the direction.

The usual use of the label is quite recent, it was in the mid-nineteenth century, once the sale of bottled wine was extended and glues were commercialized that guaranteed an absolute adherence to the glass. Emerging in the gloom of the wineries, faced with the need of the winemakers to classify the different types of wine they produced, the label evolved into what it is now: information and publicity. The label became the obligatory badge of the wine bottle, an identity card where by brief and telegraphic information, it is informed of its origin, brand, year, area, grape variety, alcohol content, content volume, name and address of the winery, health and export records. Regulated by law, labels with errors or corrections are not admitted. The back label is a complement, a space gained to complete those data that had no place in it. It is also the space used to write down the legal details of the wines covered by Denominations of Origin. Likewise, the official seals sold by the Regulatory Councils as a guarantee of origin of the wine receive this name.
